UK-based Danielle Jo Lee, whose TikTok bio reads ‘Romany and proud’, explained she and other travellers prefer not to use the toilet inside their trailers because it is ‘dirty’ and ‘smells’

‘Quite a few people have been asking me this question, so I thought I would answer it for you,’ she said in a video shared with her 23,300 followers.

‘Our trailers, they do have toilets and they do have showers but we don’t use them because it can make the floor go through, like if it leaks, ruin the floor.

‘It’s dirty using the toilet and that because of the smell and everything, and when it sells, like if we was to sell it, it’s like selling a used makeup brush, do you no what I mean?

‘Nobody’s going to want to buy a used makeup brush, so we don’t use the toilet and the shower in here because it is dirty and that, you are like cooking and doing things, and you’re living in it and the smell, it’s rotten, is basically what we think it is.’

‘It is cold, sometimes, nice hot shower, but it’s cold when you are going out in the winter.’

Danielle has produced videos tackling a range of questions, including why some travellers live in permanent homes rather than trailers, and the difference between Irish and Romany Gypsies.

Danielle is one of several travellers using TikTok to share details about their lives with followers.

Caitlin Mac, 20, and younger sister Lizzie, 18, from St Albans, have racked up 152,000 followers on TikTok after posting clips sharing an insight into life as an Irish traveller on the platform.

The pair, who go by ‘Caravan Queens’ online, revealed they’re often spurned from restaurants who either say they’re fully booked or outright tell them they won’t serve travellers.

The pair use their popular social media channels to dispel myths about the traveller community, including the common misconception that travellers don’t have a permanent residence.
