Why you should never assume the taxman is right: Half a million people forced to chase rebates last year

Switching jobs or being subject to changes in taxable benefits are common reasons why people might have paid too much tax

Nearly half a million people had to chase the taxman for rebates last year, according to figures by insurer Royal London.

Switching jobs or being subject to changes in taxable benefits are common reasons why people might have paid too much tax, says HM Revenue & Customs.

Becky O’Connor, a personal finance specialist at Royal London, says: ‘Nearly half a million people tried to get overpaid income tax back from HMRC in the past tax year.

‘This goes to show it’s a good idea not to assume the taxman is always right about what it says you owe.

‘Always check your tax statement for the year and keep a note of any unusual changes to your income that might mean you have overpaid.’
