Demi Lovato says she ‘fooled’ herself into getting engaged to ‘prove to the world’ she was ‘okay’

Demi Lovato opened up about her broken engagement with Max Ehrich, who popped the question four months after they began dating last March.

While their whirlwind pandemic relationship came to an end in September, she admitted to Entertainment Weekly their speedy romance gave her a ‘false sense of security.’

‘I really had myself fooled, because it was the safe and expected thing,’ she said of why she accepted Ehrich’s proposal. ‘Obviously I cared deeply about the person, but there was something inside of me that was like, ‘I have to prove to the world that I’m okay.’

The 28-year-old singer continued: ‘Now that I’m not engaged or married and I’m okay, I’m like, ‘Wow. Isn’t that so much more empowering?’

Speaking of her $450,000 massive engagement ring, Lovato said ‘the second it was off, I was like, ‘You know what? I’m good. I don’t need that.’

‘I just don’t need an object on my finger to make me feel like I’ve got my sh*t together,’ the two-time Grammy nominee noted. ‘It looks like stability, but it doesn’t mean that it is. And I don’t actually grow through stability. I find that I like living not in chaos or crisis, but in fluidity.’

Lovato met the Daytime Emmy nominee, 29, in March and they began quarantining together immediately, got engaged in July, and then abruptly split in September.

She and the Young and the Restless actor parted ways, after he apparently attempted to use their relationship for clout.

At the time, a source told Us Weekly she ‘is used to being the star in their dynamic, and Max is really loving the newfound attention. He is really excited about all the career opportunities coming his way.’

Her new interview comes after she opened up about her history as a sexual assault survivor and near-fatal 2018 overdose in the YouTube Originals docuseries, Demi Lovato: Dancing with the Devil.

Lovato said it was ‘liberating’ to share her story with the public, telling People: ‘Having put that out in front of the camera and knowing that people have seen that, it’s freeing. It’s empowering.’

‘It really lets that anger that was inside of me dissolve,’ she went on. ‘I had let go of a lot of the anger before and, but this was kind of just the final send-off, like, okay, I can really heal from this now.’

For years that anger fueled Lovato, leading her to self-medicate with drugs, alcohol, self-harm and destructive eating habits.

Director Michael D. Ratner said it was Demi’s idea to include her assault in the deep-dive, telling People: ‘It’s her story and she needed to be comfortable with it. She wanted it included, and that is her journey and her prerogative.’

Demi’s doc four-part documentary debuted with a pop-up drive-in Beverly Hills, earlier this week.

After the screening, which was attended by starlet Kim Kardashian and celeb-beloved pastor Judah Smith, the pop star briefly left the balcony of her Beverly Hilton room in order to serenade the audience.
