J.Hud was handpicked by Aretha to play her in the film Respect.

It had been due for release last year but was postponed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly back in October, the star revealed how she had met with the Queen of Soul in New York.

‘One of the first things she said to me was ‘You’re gonna win another Oscar for playing me, right?,’ Hudson shared. ‘Imagine Aretha Franklin looking you in the face and saying that.’

Hudson assured Franklin that she would certainly ‘try’ to give an Oscar-worthy performance.

Hudson told EW that she had found the role challenging, explaining: ‘I had to go into such a deep place to be able to do it at times, and it helped me to be able to pull from my life and it made me understand that much more why she chose me.’

She added: ‘Aretha was a very subtle person. It wasn’t a lot of big gestures, whereas I’m far more expressive….

‘She had this presence but also this stillness about her, so I would tell everybody on set, ‘If you don’t feel uncomfortable when I’m around, then I’m not giving you Aretha at all.

‘The last time I spoke to her was Aug. 8, [2018], and I can honestly say she sang until her last breath.’
