Construction workers were shocked to discover a gigantic 14ft-long snake in a construction site in the Scottish town of Greenock.

Footage showed the workers tackling the reptile with one shocked worker heard exclaiming ‘f****** hell man, look at the size of it’.

The snake was found on the edge of wasteland next to a busy pavement by contractors working for housing association River Clyde Homes in Renfrewshire.

Police were called in, but yesterday afternoon it was confirmed that the snake was dead.

Workers moved the carcass to a ‘secure location’ where animal welfare officers took the remains away.

A Police Scotland spokesman said: ‘Officers have conducted a search of the area. Enquiries are continuing.’

The SSPCA confirmed it had received a call about the snake did not attend.

It is unclear what breed of snake the creature was or if there are any others on the loose.

Locals on social media found the funny side of the incident with one saying: ‘Greenock’s best gaff in the country no doubt, where else in Scotland has snakes kicking about it the now.’

Another added: ‘As if there weren’t enough snakes slithering around the streets of Greenock.’

And another said: ‘Wouldn’t mind so much but I had a dream about being attacked in Greenock Tesco by a snake the other night.’
