  • Others told of neighbours sweeping lawns daily and cutting them with scissors

People who’ve turned their back on the city for a life in suburbia have revealed what it’s really like to move to to a tight-knit community in a hilarious thread – from mastering bin etiquette to making sure your garden conforms.

The Reddit thread was started by a British woman who moved to a ‘classic suburban street’ a year ago and revealed she had trouble adjusting to the ‘immaculate gardens and curtain twitchers’ in her new area.

Other users quickly shared tales of nosy neighbours and their bizarre behaviour, with one revealing his neighbour would cut her lawn with handheld scissors, before smoking marijuana on her 1am dog walk.

One person shared: ‘Lived on a street like that. Our neighbours across the road hoovered their drive every morning.’

Another said: ‘The lady over the road from me brings out a dustpan and brush every morning and sweeps her front lawn.

‘She also dusts her outdoor window frames with a feather duster. God knows what she must think of the state of my house.’

A third wrote: ‘I moved from North London to Herts 14 years ago. The first thing I noticed was when the local paper came through the door.

‘I was used to “15 year old murdered in broad daylight” or something like that. My new paper said “rare moth spotted in local woods”.’

Another shared a similar story: ‘Yep same here, moved from north to Guildford and they were writing about the rotary club as big news. How parochial, no mention of gang shootings,’ added another.’

Another poster wrote: ‘My dad lives down a similar street and got told that he must repaint his garage door to keep the aesthetic of the neighbourhood to a high standard. To keep the peace, he folded and did it (well, asked me to do it) but what a weird set of people. YOU MUST CONFORM!’

In another bizarre tale, another added: ‘There are two neighbours in particular that fascinate me. Separate houses. They both wear the exact same outfit every day. I’ve literally never seen them wear anything else. It’s like I live on a street of cartoon characters.’

Others shared stories of kindness that they experienced living in a tight-knit community.

One woman came home, fearing her house might be at risk of flooding, only to discover a group of neighbours had put sandbags at her front door and were keeping watch.
