Gregg Wallace says he ‘wanted to die’ after turning to booze to deal with being ‘lonely’

He’s been incredibly open about transforming his life over the years after previously drinking from 10am in the morning.

And now, Gregg Wallace, 56, has said he turned to booze to deal with being ‘lonely’ during his marriage to second wife Christine, to whom he was married to from 1999 to 2004, after they began sleeping in separate rooms.

In a new interview, the Masterchef host revealed that at one point: ‘All I wanted to do was go somewhere and die’ after drinking excessively, but insisted he WASN’T an alcoholic, saying: ‘I didn’t think I had a problem.’

Gregg explained how he would often consume gin, wine and whisky all in the same day, which would began at 10am when he’d knock on the door of a City pub.

He told OK! magazine: ‘At that level [of drinking] I’d have died or had serious liver problems had I carried on.’

Gregg admitted after a very boozy day, the chef was preparing for a ‘big customer lunch’ when he was particularly scared for his health.

He said: ‘I felt like death. All I wanted to do was go somewhere and die. Yet I ordered a gin and tonic, knocked that back, and felt instantly better. Then I had another one and thought: “Oh, this is an issue.”‘

Asked why he was drinking so heavily, he said: ‘I was lonely… Home wasn’t great so it was better to get drunk.’

Gregg confessed that he and his then-wife, Denise – with whom he shares two children – were sleeping in separate rooms, and that their marriage wasn’t good.

Despite his reliance on alcohol, asked if he was an alcoholic, Gregg insisted: ‘No, but I was a huge boozer. I didn’t think I had a problem.’
