Over the past year Matthew released his number-one New York Times bestselling memoir Greenlights where he shed some light on his romance with Camila.

They had already had Levi and Vida before Matthew decided to propose – and in fact it was a conversation with Levi that helped push him toward marriage.

‘Why isn’t Momma a McConaughey?’ said Levi. ‘I’m Levi McConaughey, Vida’s Vida McConaughey, but Momma is Camila Alves. Why doesn’t she have our last name?’

When Matthew explained that ‘we aren’t married yet,’ Levi asked why and Matthew replied: ‘I do want to marry Momma. I just don’t feel the need to.’

He talked about not wanting to marry just ‘because that’s what we’re supposed to do,’ but Levi put him on the spot asking: ‘Are you afraid to?’

Matthew ultimately admitted: ‘Yeah, I guess I am a little bit,’ and when Levi inquired: ‘Afraid of what?’ he shared: ‘…Of losing myself.’
