Crafty mother transforms kitchen into American diner for £500

A crafty mother has transformed her drab, outdated kitchen into a classic American diner for less than £500.

Lizza Truby, 35, from Wrexham, north Wales, has always wanted to go on holiday to the US but has never been able to afford a trip.

So, during last month’s lockdown, the laundry assistant decided to bring US to her home by turning her kitchen into a classic diner with pink cupboards, booth seatings, LED signs and secondhand vinyls.

The DIY cost less than £500 to complete, with Lizza explaining: ‘I can’t afford to go to America so I thought I would bring it to my house…We’ve always been into crazy things.’

Lizza said she has always dreamed of travelling across the pond but could never raise the funds, adding: ‘My son also wants to go to New York but we just can’t afford it.’

The transformation took three months, with photos capturing the stunning transformation, completed in time for Christmas.

She said: ‘I’ve done all of it myself; I made the blinds, the LED signs – everything.

‘Some of the furniture was given to us by friends and family so we just upcycled it and all the utensils were bought second hand or given to us.

‘We had been looking for a diner booth for a year when we finally found one on eBay for £280 so that’s what cost the most out of the whole project.

‘All together, we spent £500 and we absolutely love it.’

The mother-of-two said the rest of her house is decorated in similar bright tones.

She explained: ‘My son’s bedroom is blue, yellow, red and green and my eldest son has always had funky bedrooms growing up.

‘We spend more time in that room than anywhere else in the house.’

She explained: ‘American music is what really inspired me; it drove me to look into what I could do with music and that’s when the diner idea popped up.

‘We spent three months completing the diner and we still want to add more.’
