The post was met with outrage by fellow Mumsnet users who criticised the husband for trying to control his wife’s behaviour. Many showed their support by sharing stories and photos of their own outlandish hair colours.

Explaining the situation, the original poster wrote: ‘When I met my now husband in 2013 I had a dark plum red hair colour…

‘Around 2017 I dropped it to black then brown and now with the new year coming in feeling inspired to lose some weight and bring back that colour.

‘I told him this morning over breakfast and he responded with “you have had your time” … I’m 37. Is there some kind of unsaid fashion rule regarding hair colours and age?’

Mumsnet users were quick to tell the woman she wasn’t too old for plum coloured hair, with one writing: ’51 with bright red hair here. I’ve had it some shade of red or another since I was 17! I think your hair looks lovely in the pic. Honestly, do what makes YOU happy.’

Another posted: ‘I’m in my 50s and had pink hair earlier this year, then blue black and it is now dark purple. That is a gorgeous shade of plum in your photo OP, go for it!’

A third wrote: ‘cNever to old ! That’s when u age when u question your age lol I’m 44 and a hairdresser I’ve had green blue lilac ginger and platinum blonde over the last 4 years. no one believes my age I do what I feel like x.’

Only a handful of responses siding with the husband, with some questioning whether dark plum was a professional or age-appropriate choice.

One posted: ‘Maybe he thinks it will look unprofessional at work or amongst your friends as it’s a fun fashion colour?’

Another wrote: ‘It depends really….if it goes with your overall “style” then fine…otherwise it might look a bit trying too hard/trying to relive your youth which can just come across as a bit sad sorry.’
