Ed Sheeran sings of trip to Antarctica on new single Afterglow nine months before daughter’s birth

Ed Sheeran appears to reminisce about a trip to Antarctica with wife Cherry Seaborn nine months before their daughter Lyra Antarctica was born on new song Afterglow.

In the romantic track, which was released at 11am on Monday, the star sings about being: ‘love drunk waiting on a miracle, trying to find ourselves in the winter snow.’

The Shape Of You singer, 29, and Cherry, 28, announced they had welcomed their first child – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran – at the start of September – with the couple rumoured to have conceived their daughter on the continent.

In the new romantic song, Ed seems to reference his trip to Antarctica as he sings about enjoying the trip with wife Cherry.

The lyrics go: ‘Stop the clocks, it’s amazing, you should see the way the light dances off your hair.

‘A million colours of hazel, golden and red, Saturday morning is fading. The sun’s reflected by the coffee in your hand, my eyes are caught in your gaze all over again.’

Ed then appears to get personal as he sings: ‘We were love drunk waiting on a miracle, trying to find ourselves in the winter snow.

‘So alone in love like the world had disappeared, Oh I won’t be silent and I won’t let go. I will hold on tighter, ’til the afterglow.’

MailOnline has contacted representatives for Ed to ask for a comment.

In September a picture of Ed taken in Antarctica nine months before the arrival of his daughter was unearthed, which could explain the inspiration behind Lyra’s unusual middle name and posed the question of whether she was conceived there.

In the photo posted by NotJust Clothing to Instagram on December 17, Ed posed on a boat surrounded by ice, although Cherry was not visible in the picture.

MailOnline then learnt the clothing company sent Ed the festive jumper he is wearing shortly before he boarded his flight on the trip of a lifetime.

Eco-conscious Ed wore the ‘David Attenbrrr’ design, made from recycled plastic bottles while travelling around the icy continent.

It has also been revealed that Lyra’s first name was inspired by the main character in her dad’s favourite book series, His Dark Materials, by Philip Pullman.

Lyra Belacqua, also known as Lyra Silvertongue, is the heroine of Pullman’s trilogy.

In 2015, Ed tweeted: ‘[By] far, Philip Pullman – his dark materials are the best books I’ve ever read.’

Ed announced the safe arrival of his first-born in September, sharing a picture of Lyra’s booties and a colourful blanket.

Revealing that Cherry had given birth the week before, he wrote: ‘Ello! A quick message from me as I have some personal news that I wanted to share with you…

‘Last week, with the help of an amazing delivery team, Cherry gave birth to our beautiful and healthy daughter – Lyra Antarctica Seaborn Sheeran.

‘We are completely in love with her. Both mum and baby are doing amazing and we are on cloud nine over here. We hope that you can respect our privacy at this time. Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x.’

Ed dropped standalone song Afterglow on Monday morning after teasing fans that he had a surprise for them on the way.

The Grammy-winner shared his Jackson Pollock-inspired painting on Instagram, the artwork for the single, and told fans he would give them ‘a Christmas present’.

He wrote: ’11am GMT tomorrow. A Christmas present.’

And he’s since shared the uplifting song which is available on all major streaming services along with the music video, a one-take performance of the track.

He wrote: ‘Hey guys. Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too.

‘Enjoy! Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s. Back to dad land for me now, ciao x (sic)’

It marks the first new material from Ed since the 2019 album, No.6 Collaborations Project, which featured the likes of Stormzy, Khalid, Cardi B, Chance the Rapper and Eminem, and comes a year after the singer-songwriter announced his hiatus from music.

Ladbrokes have dramatically slashed the odds of Ed landing the coveted Christmas Number One single.

Having been a 20/1 outsider over the weekend, a gamble has quickly developed on Sheeran topping the festive charts following the surprise release of Afterglow.

LadBaby’s single Don’t Stop Me Eatin’, in aid of food bank charity The Trussell Trust is another hot contender for the top spot.

Ed’s teasing post on Sunday about the new song sent his fans into meltdown as they claimed the musician was ‘saving 2020’.

It came specially after Boris Johnson’s announcement on Saturday where he put a third of England, including London, into a brutal new ‘Tier 4’ from midnight.

One person said: ‘Thank you so much for this, I can’t tell you how much we all need something to look forward to.’

While a different fan put: ‘YOU REALLY SAVED 2020 OMG I CANT BELIEVE THIS IS HAPPENING.’
