Rather than purchasing expensive beauty products, an Australian TikTok user has opted to make her own remedy to boost hair growth and a natural shine.

Rebecca shared the video on November 22 and revealed she combined rice water with apple cider vinegar to spray on her hair after showering.

‘As you can see my hair is super damaged and dry … so I wanted to try this rice water trick that people use,’ she said in the video.

Australian registered nurse and anti-ageing specialist from The Wellness Group, Madeline Calfas, told Daily Mail Australia the home beauty treatment has been popular in Asian countries for years.

In the video Rebecca rinsed long grain rice in a sieve before scooping it into a mason jar and filling it with water.

To dilute the water with starch and other nutrients from the rice, she shook the jar before pouring the murky water into a spray bottle.

She then added a few tablespoons of apple cider vinegar into the bottle before spraying onto her clean hair.

Ms Calfas said: ‘Rinsing your hair in rice water mixed with vinegar is said to be a great alternative to conditioner for your hair, and can detangle, smooth and strengthen your hair, increase the shine and encourage hair growth.

‘The vinegar that is used is generally apple cider vinegar, and the role it plays is as a clarifier to help prevent build up over time.

‘Whilst it is not exactly a scientifically-proven treatment, there is a lot of anecdotal evidence that can demonstrate its effectiveness.’

Ms Calfas said researchers have found that Japanese women in the Heian period had hair down to the floor, which was attributed to washing it in rice water.

‘In China, there is the Huangluo village that also has women with exceptionally long hair that is again attributed to using rice water,’ she said.

‘So while there is nothing concrete proving this is an effective treatment, there is some promising early research.’

It is believed that the inositol in the rice water is responsible for strong, healthy, shiny hair; Inositol is also referred to as Vitamin B8, but it is not a vitamin.

‘Inositol is actually a type of sugar (named myoinositol) and it has several important functions in your body, including blood sugar regulation, reducing anxiety, some anti-depressant effects, and increasing fertility in women,’ Ms Calfas said.

‘Rice also has vitamin B6 and amino acids, and rice bran, which can help stimulate hair growth.’
