A former The Chase contestant has revealed what really goes on behind the scenes of the popular ITV quiz show.

Rachel Warwick, from Hampshire, featured on an episode of the ITV quiz show which aired on October 5 – though it was filmed nearly two years ago, when she was a student at Exeter University studying Maths and German.

Taking to TikTok, Rachel shared a video of herself answering a series of questions she had frequently been asked after appearing on the programme.

She spilled secrets on a range of little-known facts, including the absence of a studio audience – despite there being the sound of applause – and the moment contestants learn the identity of their Chaser.

Speaking about host Bradley Walsh, Rachel said he is ‘just as nice as on TV’.

‘Bradley is lovely,’ she gushed. ‘You don’t get to talk to him that much before and after filming but when I did get to speak to him he is so nice.’

In Rachel’s episode, she and her team faced Paul Sinha – aka the Sinnerman – but had no idea which of the Chasers it would be prior to filming.

‘You don’t find out who your Chaser is until the moment they come out and all the reactions are genuine,’ she explained.

‘Even Bradley doesn’t know who your Chaser will be so that’s quite exciting.’

Rachel went on to reveal that contestants are expected to do their own hair and make-up, which is ‘touched up’ by the team throughout the day.

She added: ‘You bring five outfits with you that you’re happy to wear and then the costume department pick the best one and make sure nobody is clashing. They decide what you wear.’

Having already revealed that her episode was filmed in 2018, Rachel explained that she’d applied the month before in September and got an audition the following month.

She then filmed her episode in December and it only just aired in October 2020.

‘A lot of people have asked about the studio audience but there is no audience in the studio,’ she added.

‘I don’t know if many people know this; it’s the four contestants, Bradley, the Chaser, and all the camera crew and producers and stuff but yeah there’s no audience.’

She went on to address additional questions in the comments section of her video, which has been watched more than 210,500 times.

In response to people who claimed they’d had free tickets to be in the audience while the show was filmed, she said: ‘That must’ve been The Chase Celebrity as the normal one has never had an audience.’

One fan asked whether the team continues filming straight away after host Bradley cuts to an ad break.

Rachel replied: ‘Yes – everything pauses for about 10 seconds and then we kept filming.’

She explained how she and her team mates spent an entire day together, with her filming lasting from when she arrived at the studios at 10am until 5pm.

Sadly Rachel was caught by the Sinnerman during her round with the Chaser, and she revealed the comment her made to her when she failed to make it through to the final Chase.

‘Paul said my questions were really hard!!!!’ she wrote. ‘They edited that out of the episode though.’

Rachel admitted she’d really hoped to meet fellow Chaser Anne Hegerty during filming, but she wasn’t on set. She did however meet Lord Alan Sugar as The Apprentice: You’re Fired was being filmed next door.
