Jetstar model Ruby Tuesday Matthews used to take cocaine to stay thin

Ruby Tuesday Matthews landed herself in hot water last Thursday after she held up a Jetstar flight by leaving the airport to eat oysters.

But the 27-year-old Instagram influencer is certainly no stranger to negative headlines.

In January 2019, the Byron Bay model sparked controversy when she admitted to relying on a combination of cigarettes, black coffee and cocaine to maintain her 54kg frame prior to giving birth.

The then 25-year-old also claimed drug use was rife in the glamorous social media industry, revealing that most influencers take cocaine to stay thin.

‘I need to be careful what I’m saying here, but in the influencer industry, everyone loves the baggie,’ she wrote.

‘That is how most physiques are maintained.’

She said her followers were often baffled by how she could eat so much and remain so thin. The answer, of course, was drugs.

‘A lot of people never really understood how I could eat and still be so thin, but I guess it’s pretty easy to hide an addiction,’ Ruby said.

‘People don’t realise how easy it is to hide something. Whether it’s addiction, depression, anxiety, it’s easy to hide those things.’

She admitted she immediately became concerned her big night out might have hurt her unborn baby in some way.

‘I was so thin and I was partying a lot and no one thought I would be able to fall pregnant,’ she said.

It’s unclear whether she was referring to the birth of her eldest son, Rocket, four, or her youngest son, Mars, two.

What’s more, she had traumatic memories of a miscarriage as a teenager to grapple with.

She was only 16 years old when she lost her child.

An ensuing depression threatened to derail the teenager’s life as she contemplated suicide.

She said her parents had no idea what to do with her, and placed her on a plane to Cambodia, where she worked ‘for a while’.

The social media star hoped that talking about her past trauma would guide others in a similar struggle.

‘I have battled with mental health demons on and off for most of my life. It is a topic I am going to be talking about a lot more this year,’ she added.

While Ruby says she’s since kicked her coke habit, she’s yet to shake off her fondness for cigarettes.

She was spotted puffing away in a car on Monday following a five-hour lunch with her manager Roxy Jacenko in Byron Bay.

Leaning back in the passenger seat, Ruby stared pensively into the distance as smoke plumed from the open window.

During the luncheon, the group dined on oyster platters and sipped rosé, while toasting to the swathe of publicity surrounding Ruby’s Jetstar scandal.

At one stage, Ruby poked fun at the controversy by posting a video to Instagram of the group tucking into seafood platters while declaring: ‘It’s an oystergate!’

Ruby was due to fly from Byron Bay to Sydney on Thursday at 5pm but a technical issue caused the flight to be delayed.

The budget airline asked travellers to stay put while waiting for an engineer, and told passengers the new departure time would likely be about 7.30pm.

But Ruby and her travel companion left the airport to grab a bite to eat at a beachside restaurant, holding up the plane an extra 30 minutes as it waited on the tarmac for the pair to return.

In videos exclusively taken by Daily Mail Australia on last Thursday’s flight, frustrated passengers could be heard heckling the single mother-of-two as she boarded half an hour after the plane was due to take off.

Footage showed passengers shouting ‘how were the oysters’ and ‘what a day to be pretty’ as she entered the aircraft.

When the plane touched down in Sydney, Ruby wasted no time in calling out Jetstar on her Instagram page, slamming the airline for their handling of the incident.

She blamed Jetstar for what had happened and told the other passengers to ‘grow up’.

‘I had a pretty traumatic flight experience, thanks Jetstar, you never cease to amaze me,’ she began.

‘I’m sorry but it really was not my fault…we were told it was going to be taking off at 7.45pm, I had not eaten since my smoothie that morning because I had been in back-to-back meetings.

‘I was like ”f*** this, I’m going to get food out of the airport, it’s two hours until our flight takes off, I’m going to go”.

‘I walked out, I did not hear the second announcement that apparently said ”do not leave the airport”.

‘I didn’t hear that, I swear to god, I wouldn’t have left the airport, I’m not a d***head, I do have respect for everyone else.’

She claimed she was met with ‘very personal comments’ when she got on the plane.

‘I was basically bullied by about seven to 10 to 14 people at different times, then they made comments about my children. No Jetstar staff stopped this at any time. I copped it hard for about 15 minutes.

‘I was scared for myself because number one, I was by myself…number two, no one else who was later than me copped any abuse, it was just me alone.’

The beauty has since been bombarded by dozens of Instagram users calling her ‘entitled,’ prompting her to turn off comments.
