Magda Szubanski hits back at vicious trolls and their ‘orchestrated pile-on’ for her role in Victorian Government’s COVID-19 campaign and says ‘they’re picking on the wrong person’
Magda Szubanski has been slammed by trolls for her participation in the Victorian Government’s COVID-19 campaign.
And on Tuesday, the 59-year-old spoke on The Project about the backlash she’s been subjected to.
‘They (the trolls) do a pile-on,’ she said of the online campaign against her.

‘This has happened to me so many times before when you’re putting out a message that they don’t like, and I think that a lot of people have been quite shocked to discover that there are so many people who actually don’t believe that COVID is real.’
The comedian said that trolls have been using bizarre phrases like ‘COVID hoax’ and ‘deep state’ in their messages, and accusing her of being part of ‘some plan to create a new world order’.
‘Look, you know what, if everyone just wore the masks, kept social distancing. This is completely based on the fact that the science knows that if we have a lockdown, it (the virus) shuts down much, much faster.’

She defiantly said: ‘I just want everyone to get back to normal life. But yeah, definitely – is it an orchestrated pile-on? Totally, I don’t doubt that for a second.’
Magda also went on to challenge trolls, saying: ‘You know, they’re picking the wrong person with me, because they never met my mother. They are nothing compared to growing up with my mother,’ she joked.
On Saturday, Magda posted a video on her Instagram of the Victorian Government’s COVID public health campaign, which featured her as character Sharon Strzelecki from Kath & Kim.

Former My Kitchen Rules chef Pete Evans branded the ad as ‘the most offensive and disgraceful’ thing he’d ever seen in a social media post.
Evans, who believes the Paleo diet can cure cancer and autism, also claimed in his post that the Victorian government ‘doesn’t want to help people get healthy’ – and many of his supporters felt this was a subtle reference to Szubanski’s weight.
After being flooded with abuse about her size, Szubanski tweeted that she was ‘sick of skinny people’ like Evans thinking they are better than everybody else.

‘Frankly I am sick to f**king death of skinny people (yes Pete Evans and your followers) assuming they are morally and spiritually superior,’ she wrote.
‘Fat-shaming me and assertion that fat people have no place in discussion about public health not only insults me but also all the fat nurses, doctors, ambos etc. who give so much,’ she wrote.
Evans responded to Szubanski’s tweets later on Tuesday, and clarified that he had not intended to ‘fat-shame’ her.
