Jason Derulo thought big screen debut in Cats would ‘change the world’ before box office flop: ‘I got chills down my spine!’

Jason Derulo was just one of the big names to appear in last year’s star-studded feature adaptation of the Broadway musical Cats.

And the Florida-born singer/songwriter wasn’t quite prepared for the film’s less than stellar response.

He recently revealed that he thought his big screen debut in the film would ‘change the world’ before it ended up flopping at the box office back in December.

The 30-year-old told The Telegraph this week: ‘I thought it was gonna change the world. Even when I saw the trailer, I got chills down my spine!’

He starred alongside the likes of Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, James Corden, Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, Ian McKellen and more.

Derulo played Rum Tum Tugger in the adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s musical, which opened on London’s West End in 1981.

He continued: ‘For the longest time, I was trying to figure out what’s the perfect first role. Cats checked all the boxes.

‘You can’t get a more start-studded cast, you don’t get a more respected director than an Oscar winner, and Rum Tum Tugger is a legacy role, a standout character in a classic musical.’

The movie made $74.6million globally, which meant a loss of about $113.6million, according to Deadline.

Meanwhile, the Savage Love artist is continuing to get camera time during quarantine, as he puts out viral TikTok content.

He addressed rumors last month that he makes $75,000 per video, during an interview with Complex.

Derulo said: ‘I think it’s tacky to say what I do make from them, but it’s far more than that. But, I’m not going to say what it is.’
