Ex-Barnsley FC footballer charged with causing death by dangerous driving

Ex-Barnsley FC footballer turned HGV driver is charged with causing death by dangerous driving after two loving parents were killed in a horror car crash on the M56

A ex-Barnsley FC footballer has been charged with causing death by dangerous driving after two loving parents were killed in a horror car crash on the M56.

Former striker Steven Bennett, 28, was driving a HGV during the multi-vehicle smash between junction 9, Warrington, and junction 10 Stretton Interchange in September last year.

The lorry and several cars were involved in the collision, in which five other people were hurt.

Angela Wong, 56, died at the scene and her husband Richard, 62, later died in hospital.

The couple had been married for 37 years and left behind two children and two grandchildren. 

Bennett – who played for Barnsley FC’s first team for a few games between 2010 and 2011 –  was today charged with two counts of causing death by dangerous driving, the Warrington Guardian reports.

He will appear before Chester Magistrates Court tomorrow.

At the time, the family said: ‘They touched the hearts and enriched the lives of everyone who knew them.

‘Our parents leave behind two children, two grandchildren and an extensive family and group of friends who are all devastated by their sudden loss. 

‘They will be truly missed by everyone who knew them.’

They added: ‘We are forever grateful to have had them as our wonderful parents. We love them very much and they will be forever in our hearts.’
