A van driver set himself on fire using hand sanitiser and a cigarette lighter in court because he wasn’t ‘fairly treated’.

Kamil Kalwarski, 38, previously said he would set himself alight in protest during his Teesside magistrates’ court sentencing for breaching an order.

Even though two police officers were on guard in the courtroom – and all sanitiser dispensers were taken away –  Kalwarski was still able to follow through with his claim after smuggling in a bottle of his own.

He doused his arms in the liquid and used a cigarette lighter to start the fire.

Kalwarski, from Middlesbrough, knocked over a court clerk as he charged towards District Judge Tim Capstick during the shocking incident.

Police officers were able to tackle Kalwarski – who burned off some of his hair and scorched his ear and arms – to the floor.

Kalwarski told The Sun: ‘I was only intending to harm myself.

‘I don’t think I have been fairly treated by the courts. I wanted people to pay attention.’

Kalwarski will be sentenced at a later date. He was arrested but not charged.
