The Bachelorette’s Angie Kent claims she had an allergic reaction at McDonald’s

Angie Kent claims she suffered a ‘swollen scalp and stomach’ after an allergic reaction at McDonald’s – but she should have read the small print

The Bachelorette‘s Angie Kent was diagnosed as a coeliac five years ago, and has often spoken about the struggles she encounters with the condition.

But while she usually is able to find gluten-free alternatives at restaurants, a careless decision on Monday left her with a swollen face and an upset stomach.

She told her Instagram followers she’d suffered an allergic reaction after eating McDonald’s fries, which she didn’t realise weren’t gluten free until it was too late.

Feeling sick: The Bachelorette’s Angie Kent claims she had an allergic reaction to McDonald’s fries because didn’t realise they weren’t gluten free

She explained: ‘I consumed three potatoes, and two out of those three potatoes, different types of potatoes – were not gluten free.

‘I realised this at about six o’clock this morning when I woke up with severe anxiety, swollen scalp, swollen joints, swollen stomach and feeling like I was going to spew.’

According to Coeliac Australia, ‘coeliac disease is a long-term disorder where the immune system reacts abnormally to gluten and causes inflammation in the body, particularly in the small intestine, which can lead to small bowel damage’.

The former Gogglebox star, who eats a gluten-free and pescatarian diet, claimed she had no idea her body would react badly to McDonald’s fries.

She added: ‘I’ll be sitting in bed for the next four hours rolling around in the fetal position drinking all the herbs, drinking all the supplements to flush this s**t out so I can be a normal human.

‘I feel really bad that I got so excited about smashing potatoes, because I can’t eat anything else in McDonald’s. They don’t do any pescatarian, vegetarian, gluten-free numbers – so sorry about that guys.’

However, if Angie had checked the nutritional information on the McDonald’s website, she would have discovered that the fries aren’t suitable for coeliacs.

The website clearly states: ‘Fries may be cooked using the same equipment as products containing gluten, egg, milk and soy.’

Daily Mail Australia has contacted McDonald’s for comment.

The Dancing with the Stars contestant also urged her coeliac followers to do their own research about what they can and can’t eat.

Angie is an ambassador for Coeliac Australia and was diagnosed at the age of 25.

‘I had struggled with symptoms for years, never knowing what caused them. My symptoms were getting worse as I got older – psoriasis, swollen joints, anxiety and depression,’ she recently said.

‘I believe that if I were more educated as a teen, I wouldn’t have suffered so badly with eating disorders and my mental health.’
