Kate Garraway is suffering ‘unimaginable pain’ but has ‘never complained’ as her husband Derek Draper slowly recovers from COVID-19

Kate Garraway is suffering ‘unimaginable pain’ during her husband Derek Draper’s battle with coronavirus, Lorraine Kelly has revealed.

The presenter, 60, praised her friend for ‘never complaining’ and ‘soldiering on,’ as Derek begins the slow road to recovery, after being comatose for four months with COVID-19.

Kate, 53, is set to return to her hosting duties on Good Morning Britain next week after being told by doctors to ‘get on with life,’ as her husband remains unconscious despite being brought out of his coma and declared COVID-free.

Writing in her column for The Sun Lorraine said: ‘She has been coping with the unimaginable pain and distress of her husband Derek battling for his life after contracting Covid-19.

‘Kate has never once complained or asked: ‘Why me?’

‘She has simply soldiered on, reassuring and raising her children, praising the NHS and helping others in the same boat.

‘At times it has been a lonely, miserable, tough voyage through uncharted waters. But Kate steered a stoic and steady course throughout.’

Kate is set to make her long-awaited return to GMB on Monday after being urged to ‘get on with life’ as Derek begins his recovery from coronavirus.

The mother-of-two revealed last month that while he’s been declared COVID-free, the virus has caused huge damage to his body, and he remains in a semi-conscious state despite being brought out of his coma.

She then returned to the GMB studio on Wednesday, where she revealed her husband Derek remains in a ‘desperate situation’ and has almost died six times when his organs failed during his 100-day battle with coronavirus.

The former I’m A Celebrity star admitted she was ‘absolutely gripped by fear’ at times when the former political lobbyist was in a coma, but said he has amazed doctors with his resilience and they have ‘fantastic hope’.

Kate also said that despite Derek’s ill health she remains hopeful that he will recover, as he has already defied expectations with his incredible progress.

She added: ‘It is a very desperate situation, it’s very very difficult, of course there’sf fantastic hope he’s still alive, the doctors do keep saying it’s a miracle he’s still alive.

‘I was speaking to a doctor yesterday who said he’s sick as anyone I’ve ever seen in 35 years of medicine, and some of those people who were as sick of him aren’t here. Six times they said he’s not going to make it, and obviously you couldn’t visit.

‘So he’s been very very sick, but it’s a new disease, there’s no data, so what they can say is it’s great he’s here. There’s flickers of hope, his lings are starting to recover, his kidneys are doing better, his liver, but they don’t know how much better he can get.’
