  • Others from across the UK revealed they hope to stop splurging unnecessarily

A woman who used to spend large sums on clothes for her children and beauty supplies has sparked a discussion about lifestyle habits that shouldn’t be revisited when lockdown ends.

Writing anonymously on Mumsnet, the UK parent explained that lockdown has helped her to realise how excessive her spending was before.

She said that she wasn’t mindful and would spend an extravagant amount on material purchases, including clothes and make-up.

A stream of responses to the post admitted they’ve also reflected on their spending habits during lockdown, as some revealed that they won’t be renewing their gym membership while others said they’re saving money by using what’s in the fridge and not contstantly popping to the supermarket.

The woman explained that she would make many purchases that she didn’t need, before lockdown.

She wrote: ‘For me, I realise after weeks in lockdown that I spent a fortune on kid’s clothes that they never wore, way too much and getting on fine with no new purchases!

‘Also, spent a fortune on makeup and skincare that I am still using, makes me think I was living in a world where there was so much excessive expenditure on material things I did not need, will be mindful in future.’

Sharing similar experiences of lavish spending on material items, many confessed how their lifestyle have changed.

One person wrote: ‘I probably won’t spend as much on kid’s clothes either (doubt there will any parties or activities for the poor souls for the rest of the year anyway) and I have streamlined my own wardrobe as I’ve realised it’s better to have some classic go-to’s rather than piles of things that I hardly use at the best of times’

‘Definitely expensive salon to get my hair coloured every six weeks. I always wanted to do it myself, after a very bad experience five years ago. Had no choice but to try this time and it really looks as nice as the four I get at the salon.

‘I’ve never cared that much about the cut, which is really a simple style, so I’ll just go somewhere cheaper for that. Much money saved!,’ another added.

Others revealed they won’t be spending as much on leisure activities, when lockdown restrictions are lifted.

One person said: ‘Won’t be going back to the cinema – I used to go once or twice a month but feel as though I never want to see another film ever again now!

‘Apart from that I am desperate to get back to how I lived before. I miss meeting up with friends, taking my DCs to their various activities and either watching them or having a cup of tea and reading my book, and I really miss running my Brownie unit (having Zoom meetings but it’s not the same).’

Another wrote: ‘Gym membership. I’ve been doing more exercise at home than I ever did, when my membership was active’

‘Going to the pub a couple of times a week to eat out, due to not having shopped/ planned weekly meals etc and run out of easy meals in the fridge. We are now getting a weekly delivery, planning meals etc and obvious not going to the pub saving £100 a week of £5k pa. Not planning to get back in that habit,’ a third added.
