The Voice contestant Ricky Muscat looks barely recognisable during an audition for Australian Idol

He earned himself a place on Boy George’s team on The Voice on Monday night.

But Ricky Muscat previously tried to find fame as a singer on Australian Idol in 2006 – an important detail that wasn’t mention on Nine’s talent show.

He made it to the top five alongside Jessica Mauboy, but his hopes of becoming a pop star were crushed when he was eliminated from the competition.

Resurfaced footage from Australian Idol shows the now-36-year-old singing So Sick by American R&B star Ne-Yo.

Ricky’s family cheered as he performed in front of judges Marcia Hines, Mark Holden and Kyle Sandilands.

He auditioned for The Voice on Monday, and both Kelly Rowland and Boy George turned their chairs for the music teacher.

However, Kelly was not impressed by Ricky’s choice of words when he discussed his thought process.

‘George, I love you. Kelly, you’re so beautiful. The coach that I’m choosing is George,’ he said.

Ricky was then shown hugging only the male judges as he left the stage, leaving Kelly visibly perplexed.

Delta noticed that Kelly looked upset and went over to her chair to talk.

‘It is the most frustrating s**t. You know what’s so frustrating? To be called beautiful… it’s so degrading. It really p**ses me off. Like “Oh, you’re so cute”, or “you’re so pretty”. I’ve been here [in the music industry] for 20-something years.’

It appears Kelly was not only referencing Ricky, but also a number of people who have complimented her looks instead of her talent in the past.

‘I don’t care who [Ricky] would have chosen, it’s just the fact that he chose George and goes, “You, you’re a woman, you’re pretty.” That makes me upset. Oh, that irritates me to no end!’
