The Lord of the Rings cast reunite, show off their matching tattoos, and raise over $47K for charity

The Lord of the Rings cast reunited for charity and discussed the legacy of their hit trilogy on Josh Gad’s Reunited Apart webseries, which started streaming Sunday.

The 50-minute special – technically taped ‘a week ago’ – was the first time fans got to see this much of the talented ensemble back together since 2003.

To break the ice, the 39-year-old Grammy winner asked that the members of the fellowship unveil their matching tattoos of the word ‘nine’ in Elvish.  

Sir Ian McKellan – who played the wizard Gandalf – joked: ‘When I read this upside down, of course, it spells Gucci.’

Dominic Monaghan – who played the hobbit Merry – flexed his arm and said: ‘Flash my tricep there. Just ignore that tricep, guys. That’s just isolation tricep.’

At that, Orlando Bloom – who played the elf Legolas – flexed his arm and clapped back: ‘Ignore that bicep, Dom.’ 

As Elijah Wood – who played the hobbit Frodo – dropped trou, McKellan recalled: ‘Elijah, I know where you have yours. I was holding your hand all the way through.’ 

Monaghan wisecracked: ‘Yes, holding his gland at one point, Ian.’

Director Peter Jackson – who refused to remove his shirt to show off his ’10’ shoulder tattoo – laughed: ‘Three inches lower [Elijah] and we’d be in trouble then!’ 

With the exception of John Rhys-Davies – whose stunt double Brett Beattie got tatted instead – Sean Astin, Viggo Mortensen, and Billy Boyd also got inked a week before filming wrapped.

With a little help from Taika Waititi on trivia, Gad also included writer Philippa Boyens, composer Howard Shore, John Rhys-Davies, Liv Tyler, Andy Serkis, Sean Astin, Sean Bean, and Miranda Otto.  

And Karl Urban – who played Rider of Rohan Éomer – showed off his souvenir from the series, a silver helmet. 

Josh’s reunion garnered over 111K views and has already raised over $47K for the nonprofit charity Share Our Strength’s No Kid Hungry campaign.

Jackson’s critically-acclaimed, beloved film trilogy (2001-2003) were based on the iconic books (1954-1955) by J. R. R. Tolkien.

In total, the three films scored 17 Academy Awards and amassed $2.981B at the global box office as well as spawning the prequel Hobbit trilogy.
