Gogglebox fans joked the sofa stars ‘hit the nail on the head’ after they mocked Boris Johnson‘s lockdown speech for giving mixed messages.

In Friday night’s episode of the Channel 4 show, the stars were shown the Prime Minister’s update, which aired on Sunday, 10 May – and were left particularly baffled by the new ‘stay alert’ slogan.

In his address to the nation, Boris highlighted the government’s five-step plan to easing the coronavirus lockdown in the next few weeks.

He advised for those who are unable to work from home to go back to work and added that the public can now take ‘unlimited’ exercise.

And while many Brits were left confused by the ‘mixed messages’ laid out in the tentative steps, it seems they weren’t the only ones.

During Boris’ speech, Gogglebox’s Tom Snr took particular issue with the ‘stay alert’ slogan and went on to do an impression of the Prime Minister which left viewers in hysterics.

‘Go to work, don’t go to work, get public transport, but don’t get public transport, but go to work, and don’t go to work,’ he said. ‘Go to the park, but don’t go to the park, get exercise but don’t get exercise and go to work.’

Lorry driver Tom was equally as unimpressed about how he was being advised to get to work.

‘Even better by walking? I work 70 miles away!’ he exclaimed.

Taking to Twitter during the episode, fans of the show praised the Gogglebox star’s reaction for being ‘TV gold.’

‘Loved watching #Gogglebox as they tore into Boris Johnson’s statement,’ wrote one. ‘Not really been a fan of gogglebox but this is tv gold. So funny. And pretty accurate to be fair ##BorisJohnson #lockdown.’

A second added: ‘Brilliant #Gogglebox hits the nail on the head again,’ while a third penned: ‘The Malone family absolutely nailed Boris Johnson ‘s speech on #Gogglebox.’

Elsewhere, the camera jumped to the Siddiqui family, and Umar told his brother Baasit: ‘It’s not often a government announcement needs a disclaimer after it – ‘no rationality or scientific advice was used in this announcement.’

Meanwhile, siblings Peter and Sophie expressed confusion over the messages being given from number 10.

‘Unlimited exercise? People are to use that like the unlimited salad bowls at Pizza Hut!’ said Peter.

And Stephen could also be seen saying to husband Daniel: ‘Work from home if you can….. if you can. If you can’t…then you should go to work. Brilliant!’

After the episode aired, it wasn’t long before social media was flooded with comments – with many agreeing with the views of the families in the show.

‘I had these exact same conversations with family and friends after Boris Johnson’s statement. A true reflection of how the majority of the country is feeling. Fair play C4/Gogglebox,’ wrote one, while a second commented: ‘It’s just what we were all thinking #StayAlert.’
