Banks turn customers away from branches if the visit is not deemed ‘essential’

Banks are turning away customers who visit branches without a good reason.

Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland are now providing only ‘essential’ services in branches.

Nationwide customers may also be asked to come back again another time in an effort to stop the spread of coronavirus.

Non-essential services may include opening up an additional bank account. Sheila Coward, 75, was turned away from her Halifax branch last week.

She took £140 in£2 coins to her Penrith branch, but was told it was not taking cash deposits due to the virus.

Halifax has since confirmed it is still accepting cash, but it is understood that Sheila’s visit wasn’t essential.

A spokesman says its branches are providing essential services and ensuring vulnerable customers can continue to speak to staff.

NatWest, Santander, Barclays and HSBC are still serving every customer who visits a branch.
