Notting Hill Carnival is cancelled but organisers still promise ‘celebration of Carnival culture and arts’ for August bank holiday weekend

The Notting Hill Carnival has been scrapped for the first time in its history following the outbreak of coronavirus, organisers have today confirmed.

Planners of the famous event, held each August Bank Holiday weekend in the streets of London’s Notting Hill, say the decision the cancel the 2020 carnival has been taken due to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Organisers say they ‘do not wish to put extra strain’ on St John’s Ambulance Service and the NHS.

They say they are instead working on plans for a ‘celebration of carnival culture and arts’ for August Bank Holiday weekend. 

In a statement, organisers said: ‘Like all events around the world, the Covid-19 pandemic has meant that Notting Hill Carnival has faced many challenges this year.

‘After lengthy consultations with out strategic partners and our advisory council, the board has taken the decision that this year’s carnival will not take place place on the streets of Notting Hill as it has done for over 50 years.’
