M&S launches home-delivery from 142 UK stores on Deliveroo before £750m Ocado deal in September

M&S have launched on Deliveroo and will deliver store favourites to customers’s doors in 30 minutes amid coronavirus lockdown. 

The upmarket grocer had a trial partnership with Deliveroo and after its success, have made more than 130 M&S food, beverage and household items available across the country. 

You can get favourites such as Gastropub meals, ready-prepared Indian, Chinese and Italian dishes, fresh produce and even packs of Percy Pigs delivered to your door.

Customer favourites including the M&S 100 per cent orange juice, the 12′ Stone Baked Cheese & Tomato Pizza, their 4 Pint Semi Skimmed Milk, the Super Seed Loaf 800g, and their Chilli & Rice Meal will also be available.  

The Deliveroo range also includes basics such as fruit, vegetables, pasta, alcohol and toilet roll. 

M&S have never had a delivery service before but have launched their Deliveroo service to help families in lockdown amid the coronavirus pandemic.

Families are struggling to get hold of vital items as there are massive queues for supermarkets due to social distancing measures. 

There is a £4.99 delivery charge for the service, but other prices remain the same as in store. 

But M&S have introduced a two-item limit on some purchases as many families are turning to online ordering as they are encouraged to stay indoors during lockdown.

Deliveroo and Co-op also recently announced a new nationwide partnership. 

There are now nearly 400 Co-op stores on Deliveroo across the UK, meaning families at home can access household items 7 days a week in under 30 minutes. 

Supermarket retailer Morrisons has also partnered with Deliveroo to offer beer and wine delivered direct to people’s homes.

Their participating outlets include Salisbury SF Connect, Birmingham, Plymouth and Belfast along with many others across the country.

M&S’s delivery service comes as they also launched ‘essentials boxes’, meaning families can get vital items delivered to them for £35. 

This comes after M&S are due to deliver their full range through Ocado from September.  

M&S will pay Ocado £750million for a 50% share of the new venture, when Ocado’s deal to supply Waitrose products expires. 

The £600million cash call on its shareholders will bring its ready meals and other food hall items in a £1.5billion deal with Ocado. 

But analysts raised concerns that M&S overpaid for the Ocado deal, worrying after M&S shares fell by 12%, the biggest one-day fall since 2016 while Ocado’s shares rose by 3%.

Neil Wilson, the chief market analyst at Markets.com, said to the Guardian: ‘M&S’s purchase of Ocado’s UK retail business looks rather like one of its own ready meals – expensive, not very good for you but easy, quick and ready to heat up.’

Ocado announced last year that it had cut ties with Waitrose after 19 years – to sign with the middle-class favourite’s arch-rivals Marks & Spencer. 

Many shoppers are not pleased that Ocado’s deal will change amid coronavirus concerns and uncertainty. 

Waitrose will refocus its online efforts into Waitrose.com after the deal loss with Ocado.
