Big Brother 2020: Housemate Mat Garrick’s TV past exposed

He’s not just a country boy! Big Brother’s first confirmed housemate Mat Garrick’s TV past exposed after being dubbed the ‘outback tradie’

Channel Seven announced mining electrician Mat Garrick as the first confirmed housemate for the upcoming Big Brother Australia reboot, on Sunday.

The 30-year-old has been dubbed the ‘outback tradie’ and filmed his promo in his hometown of Broken Hill, focusing on his country lifestyle in far west New South Wales.

However, the network failed to mention Mat’s very memorable television past.

Mat was a panelist on Paul McDermott’s former ABC quiz show, Think Tank.

He appeared in most episodes of the short-lived program after it premiered in February 2018, until it was then cancelled in July 2019.

His promotional trailer for Big Brother made no reference to his TV past.

The trailer explained that electrician Mat was born in Broken Hill and has lived there his entire life – and he praised the ‘big friendship network’ and ‘community spirit’ the town has.

He said: ‘My beautiful fiancée Jess is the best thing that’s ever happened to me. It’s a bit of a running joke that I’m Don Bradman and bat above my average with Jess.’

When asked how he’ll go in the house, Mat said: ‘I hope I’m a pretty likeable guy. Got to keep my wits about myself. Some people are conniving and backstabbing.’
