John Lewis seamstresses who usually sew curtains, pillows and duvets have turned their hand to making scrubs for the NHS.

The retailer yesterday announced it would reopen its Lancashire textiles factory to make 8,000 washable gowns for Northumbria NHS Foundation Trust over four weeks.

A good sign: The retailer has also donated nearly 22,000 yards of fabric from its haberdashery departments to Scrubs Glorious Scrubs

It has also donated nearly 22,000 yards of fabric from its haberdashery departments to Scrubs Glorious Scrubs, a voluntary sewing collaborative making scrubs for NHS workers, who will make 6,000 sets of scrubs.

John Lewis has also accelerated the strategic review conducted by Dame Sharon White, who took over as chairman in February.

And bosses last week said they had made plans for sales falling by up to 35 per cent this year.
