You may not agree with all the author’s choices in this lively record of the world’s most stylish and individual dressers, but there is no denying that the iconic women featured — Katharine Hepburn, Patti Smith, Lauren Bacall, Josephine Baker among others — have powerfully influenced women over the decades. 

Each one’s unique style has remained a vivid inspiration to others and never faded out of fashion. 

Pictured is French singer Francoise Hardy — and who hasn’t emulated that nonchalant mix of long, tousled hair and a leather jacket? The photograph was taken 50 years ago but her style lives on.
