MailOnline has approached TalkTalk and BT for comment.

TalkTalk has not put out a statement but has started replying to customers directing complaints to them on Twitter.

In one message, the official TalkTalk Twitter account said: ‘We are aware of an issue at the moment and the team are on the case.

‘There are no timescales for a fix yet but please keep an eye on our Twitter feed as updates will be posted here.’

Reports of problems surfaced for both companies around 10:10am and then a deluge of complaints saw the number of people having issues surge rapidly.

The current total of complaints is in excess of 30,000 for TalkTalk and 1,900 for BT.

The outage comes as millions of Britons are still working home amid the coronavirus pandemic, leaving many workers stranded.

Twitter was inundated with disgruntled internet users bemoaning their supplier.

Several users pointed out the bad timing of the drop in coverage, with one saying he would likely miss a work Zoom call.

Another complained of having no way to report issues and one wrote: ‘Note to self, find another internet provider. @TalkTalk is down AGAIN!’
