Paul Mescal has a pint in an Irish pub in behind-the-scenes snaps for new show The Deceived

He shot to fame almost overnight with his role as hunky hearthrob Connell in Normal People.

And behind-the-scenes snaps of Paul Mescal filming his new four-part psychological thriller The Deceived show him hard at work on set.  

Pictures taken while the actor, 24, and his co-stars Emmett J. Scanlan and Emily Reid were filming show them getting their makeup fixed and sitting in a pub.

In one scene Paul, dressed in a casual checked shirt, appears to be concentrating hard as he listens to instructions ahead of shooting another take.

While in another image from inside the pub he shows off his trademark cheeky grin while laughing with blonde beauty Emily.

Emmett, 41, is also seen in several scenes, including one where he is stood under an umbrella while getting his makeup touched up. 

The Hollyoaks star, who plays attractive lecturer Dr Michael Callaghan, also appears in a classroom scene and looks every inch the intellectual while sat behind his desk.

Other pictures taken during filming show Ian McElhinney, who plays Dr Michael’s father, listening to some notes.

The cast filmed the show in Northern Ireland and Cambridge, with some scenes being done during the night at a large country estate.

The candid snaps come as The Deceived is confirmed as hitting TV screens on Monday 3rd August.  

The explosive insight into the four-part drama teases an action-packed storyline where Ophelia [Emily] finds herself trapped in a world where she can no longer trust her own mind.

The plot sees the love affair interrupted by a shocking and tragic death, with Ophelia confiding in Paul’s character McKeough – a local builder. 

Gangs of London actor Emmett plays the timelessly attractive English lecturer Dr Michael Callaghan, while Catherine Walker plays his long-suffering wife Roisin.

Elswhere in the series, Little Women actress Eleanor Methven plays devoted and sometimes overbearing mother Mary Mulvery.

While Ian McElhinney is Michael’s father Hugh, who viewers will see fighting the oncoming tide of dementia.

The series, which was filmed in Northern Ireland and Cambridge, was created and written by Derry Girls’ Lisa McGee and Tobias Beer.  

Executive producer Charlie Hampton of New Pictures says: ‘I was absolutely delighted to bring Lisa and Toby’s fantastic scripts to screen. 

‘Working with such talented writers is always a pleasure and it was important to find equally talented people for both in front of and behind the camera.

‘We wanted to make a show that nods to classic thrillers but also make something really modern that speaks to a contemporary audience. 

‘The Deceived is a psychological relationship thriller that will have the audience questioning everything and will hopefully leave them wanting more.’    

The Deceived will start on Monday 3rd August at 9pm on Channel 5.
