Lorraine Kelly reveals she and her family went through some ‘very tough months’ after her father John had secret health battle last year

Lorraine Kelly has revealed she and her family went through some ‘very tough months’ last year when her father John fell ill.

The presenter, 61, spoke candidly with The Mirror on Saturday about the patriarch and her fears they would ‘lose him’ when he battled a ‘massive infection’ and heart failure in February last year.

Reflecting on his health, she said: ‘We went through a few very tough months thinking we were going to lose him. It was just awful – but he was amazing, he rallied.

‘This time last year he was in hospital and got out just before Covid started. He basically has heart failure.

‘He also had a really bad scare and they thought he had lung cancer but it was just a massive, massive infection.’

Lorraine went on to say she hadn’t seen her parents John and Anne – who live in Scotland- since July last year, and admitted that was the hardest part of lockdown.

She went on to say she was concerned that her parents were not telling her if there was anything wrong with them because they didn’t want to worry her, and admitted she found it ‘really hard’ that she couldn’t do anything about it.

Despite her concerns, both Lorraine’s parents have now received their Covid-19 vaccination, which she said they are ‘grateful for.

Lorraine added that while she was not expecting to able to see them for her father’s birthday in March, she hopes they will be reunite for her mother’s 80th birthday in September instead.

During her Christmas Day special last year, Lorraine broke down in tears after receiving a sweet video message from her mum Anne.

The presenter admitted she hasn’t seen her mum ‘for ages’ due to COVID-19 restrictions after she was surprised with the message during the show.

She told Dr Hilary Jones and fashion expert Mark Heyes: ‘I wish I could see them, it’s terrible isn’t it? I haven’t seen her for ages.

‘Everybody is the same though. Zoom calls galore today. We will see each other. It’s like we keep saying. We have to scale it down for this year but wow are we going to make up for it next year? My wee mum, that was so lovely.’
