Malcolm & Marie is the work of the actress’ Euphoria director Sam Levinson.
Zendaya plays the girlfriend of a filmmaker, played by Washington, and the intimate drama follows the couple as they examine their relationship over the course of one night.
The actress, 24, served as a producer on the project and has been diligent in promoting it as much as she can on her social media.
‘This is my first time being a leading lady, but also my first time being this creatively involved in something, producing something, co-financing something, owning something and sharing it all with my crew,’ she explained in a recent interview on GMA.
On screen couple: The drama stars Zendaya, 14, and John David Washington, 36, and was filmed over 14 days last summer amid strict COIVID-19 protocols
Low-key: the film was shot in black and white and was directed by Zendaya’s Euphoria director Sam Levinson

The movie was shot over 14 days last summer with a crew of just 22.
It was also made in black and white, something which Zendaya says gives it a certain ‘timelessness’.
‘There was a thought also about reclaiming the narrative of black and white Hollywood and Black actors really having their moment at that time,’ she said on the ABC morning show.
‘A lot of filmmakers have already done this before, a lot of Black filmmakers, so it’s not necessarily a new idea, but we did want to pay tribute to that era and reclaim that beauty and that elegance with these two Black actors,’ she added.
