He is well-known for his daredevil stunts in the Mission: Impossible franchise.

And Tom Cruise is said to be eager to take his fearlessness to new heights and become the first Hollywood star to film in space.

The Top Gun actor, 58, is reportedly looking into the possibility of shooting a scene beyond Earth’s atmosphere as part of the final two installments of the Mission: Impossible franchise.

He is said to be willing to splash out eye-watering amounts of money to achieve his ambition – and has already ‘spoken to NASA’ about his bold venture.

A source told The Sun: ‘He’s keen to push things further than anybody has ever done before – and, obviously, the big unknown is can you actually film in space. He’s pretty certain he can make something work and has spoken to NASA about it, too.’

The source went on to claim that NASA also think Tom’s adventurous plans are ‘feasible’ and said it is all ‘falling into place’.

MailOnline has contacted a representative for Tom for comment.

Tom is currently filming for Mission: Impossible 7 in Rome and the famous cast have shot tense scenes at many of the Italian capital’s most iconic landmarks.

Work on film has seen the cast and crew go before cameras in a range of European locations, including the UK and Norway, as well as the Italian city of Venice.

The shoot is understood to be nearing completion after a turbulent filming schedule caused by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Earlier this year, filming for the upcoming action movie was halted in Italy after cases of novel coronavirus rose sharply.

The crew and actors headed to Norway to film instead, before returning to the Italian capital to continue with scenes once it was safe to do so.

It was reported this summer that Hollywood legend Tom hired a £500,000 ship for the film’s crew in Norway to avoid any coronavirus-related delays.

And in October, Tom held crisis talks with director Christopher McQuarrie after 12 people on set reportedly tested positive for COVID-19.

Health chiefs were said to be tracing the contacts of those who tested positive after filming was suspended, dashing hopes it was an isolated case.

It appeared to be yet another blow for the action movie franchise after filming was suspended earlier this year during the first European wave of coronavirus when cases rose sharply in Italy.

The actor and the director, who worked together on previous Mission Impossible movies and Jack Reacher, were deep in conversation at their luxury base in the city days after the situation came to light, but filming has been allowed to continue with production restarting in recent weeks.

The award-winning actor has previously spoken out about being written off during his career in the movie industry, despite starring in huge blockbuster hits.

But Tom, who plays Ethan Hunt in the Mission: Impossible franchise, has insisted he does not allow the speculation to bother him.

He explained: ‘All I can think about is making the movie at hand and doing the best I can and enjoying it.

‘I’ve heard so many things, going back to Top Gun and Rain Man and Born on the Fourth of July – “He’s not going to make another movie”; “He’s just a teen idol”; “It’s going to destroy his career”.

‘People are going to say whatever they’re going to say.’

Tom claimed he has simply learned to deal with the speculation and criticism as his career has evolved.

He continued: ‘I’ve read it and seen it all before. That’s just the way it is. What are you going to do?’

Mission: Impossible 7 is set to be released on November 19, 2021.
