Weekend Sunrise hosts Matt Doran and Monique Wright interview surfing duck

Weekend Sunrise hosts Matt Doran and Monique Wright can’t contain their laughter as they interview a surfing DUCK live on the Gold Coast

It’s not every day that you get to meet a surfing duck, but that’s exactly what happened to Weekend Sunrise hosts Matt Doran and Monique Wright.

The duo met Duck, a duck who’s become a big sensation and a ‘local celebrity’ for its ability to hang ten.

They interviewed the talented bird and its owner Kate Miller in a live cross to the Gold Coast on Saturday.

‘Kate, this is the most amazing animal,’ said an impressed Monique, 48, as she introduced Kate and Duck, who are both seen sitting by some rocks near the water.

The TV host then asked Kate how the animal ‘sat there’ for half an hour, without being fed, while they waited for their interview.

‘We don’t feed him anything because we don’t want a duck that begs for food like seagulls and irritates the neighbourhood,’ the owner responded.

‘He’s just happy, he loves being out in the fresh air,’ she continued. ‘The hardest challenge has been keeping him out of the water. He desperately wants to get in and go for a swim.’

‘But it’s a very windy day in Queensland, but he’s got a face mask that doubles as a hat,’ Kate adds, referring to a cloth tied around the animal’s midsection.

Matt Doran, 37, who begins to refer to Duck in third person, enquires about his decision to surf.

‘He hasn’t had his feathers cut. If he wished, Duck could get up and fly, but he chooses to surf, this is of his own free will.’

Kate joked that the bird’s ‘undercarriage’ is ‘too heavy’ for him to be able to fly away.

She then reveals to the hosts that this is her fourth duck and her family began to have the feathered animals as pets because they couldn’t take dogs to the beach.

The TV hosts asked Kate how long she ‘agonised’ over the choice of the name.

‘It’s a challenge. We’ve had four ducks and they’ve all been called Duck,’ Kate humourously responded.

Pet names: The hosts asked Kate how long she 'agonised' over the choice of the name, to which she said it was a 'challenge,' but all of her previous ducks have been called Duck.
