TSB closing its over-the-counter services at 4pm across its branch network

TSB has started closing its over-the-counter services at 4pm across its branch network.

The bank has decided to close tills earlier after it ran a pilot of the scheme in 14 branches last year.

Staff have been told to direct customers to online banking instead of carrying out cash transactions.

A sure sign: Staff have been told to direct customers to online banking instead of carrying out cash transactions

TSB has been adding video banking and self-service machines to many branches, and is understood to be focusing on face-to-face meetings with customers looking for mortgage or insurance products after 4pm.

But staff have been told not to turn away customers who insist on using the till for cash transactions after this time.

Mark Brown, general secretary at the bank’s union, TBU, said: ‘TSB feel customers doing [cash] transactions don’t make them money.’

TSB said the move was part of updating branches to reflect better how customers were using them.

The Mail on Sunday has long fought for access to cash in every town.
