Britons are hoarding more than £870m in foreign currency in their homes with almost two-thirds keeping coins and banknotes in jars and drawers, survey reveals

Britons are hoarding more than £870 million in foreign currency around their homes, a survey has revealed.

Almost two-thirds of people keep foreign coins and banknotes in jars and drawers, worth an average of £49.56 each.

Euros are the most common, followed by US dollars, with most people saying they are holding on to them for their next trip.

But many admit to still having pesetas, lira and francs, all replaced by the euro 19 years ago. 

Others told the survey by money transfer firm Monese that it was too much hassle to change the currency.
