Two men are charged over ‘grossly offensive’ and ‘racist’ social media video targeting Priti Patel

  • Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) charged two men over ‘racist’ video
  • Jake Henderson, 28, and Robert Cumming, 26, were accused of an offence
  • It follows complaints in relation to a video targeting Home Secretary Priti Patel

Two men have been charged after a ‘grossly offensive’ and ‘racist’ video targeting the Home Secretary Priti Patel was posted online.

Jake Henderson, 28, and Robert Cumming, 26, have been accused of an offence under section 127 of the Communications Act.

The charges were made after viewers complained and relate to a grossly offensive, indecent, obscene or menacing message or matter shared on a public communication network.

The CPS said the defendants were summonsed on May 29. It is not known what platform the video was sent on.

Henderson, from Newark, Nottinghamshire, and Cumming, from Doncaster, South Yorkshire, are due before magistrates on June 29.

Janine Smith, chief Crown prosecutor for CPS East Midlands, said: ‘Following complaints in relation to a video targeted at Home Secretary Priti Patel and posted on social media in January 2021, the CPS has authorised Nottinghamshire Police to charge Jake Henderson and Robert Cumming with sending a grossly offensive message by a public communication network.

‘They will appear at Nottingham/Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on June 29.

‘The function of the CPS is not to decide whether a person is guilty of a criminal offence, but to make fair, independent and objective assessments about whether it is appropriate to present charges to a court to consider.

‘Proceedings against Jake Henderson and Robert Cumming are active and nothing should be published or shared online that could in any way jeopardise the defendants’ right to a fair trial.’
