MAKE IT MIDI

Dresses often hog the limelight in summer, but there’s a refreshing change this year as skirts take centre stage. It’s all about the A-line ‘midaxi’, a term retailers have latched on to which just means halfway between long and short.

We’ll stick to calling it a midi, which is the most wearable length whatever your body shape. There are many pleated styles but I like this simple, full skirt from John Lewis. Overly gathered detailing isn’t always flattering to tummies and hips. The gentle flare makes ankles look slimmer.

DO THE SKIM

The simple cotton fabric of these skirts means they won’t cling, but instead skim your figure. They feel light, too, are super-practical (easy to wash and iron) and can be dressed up or down. For an occasion, pair it with vibrant accessories — Boden has some great statement earrings now.

ALL ABOUT THE WAIST

Australian designer Zimmermann’s floral linen full skirt was a dream floating down the catwalk and is sure to be a celebrity favourite — the Duchess of Cambridge and Elle Macpherson are already fans of this pretty label.

Rodarte’s versions have a similar 1950s silhouette and are designed to be worn high around the waist. If you don’t have a cropped cardigan, tuck in a top. Look for a thin knit if you want to keep chills at bay, and wear a vest top or body underneath for a smooth line.

GO BIG OR GO HOME

Now is the time to give bold prints a try, as an A-line skirt will show off a big, vibrant floral like this one to perfection. Zara’s multicoloured A-line will give you plenty of colour options for tops, while & Other Stories’ skirt has deep pockets at the front which are both useful and pretty — and give it a homely feel.
