He celebrated his 95th birthday less than six months ago but Dick Van Dyke is still thriving.

‘And then I do these,’ he said, rotating his legs in the air.

‘So all you old guys out there, listen to me. I’m telling you, you can keep going… I’m still dancing and singing!’

The wide-ranging interview covered Dick’s prolific career in Hollywood, starting from his days hosting the CBS Morning Show to his recent appearance in the 2018 film Mary Poppins Returns.

The actor, who famously played chimney sweep Bert in the 1964 movie Mary Poppins, didn’t take any shortcuts when dancing on top of a desk in the recent film starring Emily Blunt and Lin-Manuel Miranda.

The entertainment icon was presented with three different dance routines, and Dick selected the most difficult one just to prove he could do it.

‘He gave me three versions, and I took the hardest one. I said, “I want that one,”‘ he recalled.

‘I had to prove I can do it. I was 91 I think.’

Aside from the highs of his career, Dick also reflected on some of the more difficult parts of his life, including the revelation he was a recovering alcoholic.

The actor revealed his struggles on The Dick Cavett Show in 1974, an era in which such topics were difficult to discuss publicly.

‘I had friends who said “You’re crazy,”‘ Dick said. ‘But it seemed to help a lot of people, I got a lot of mail from people who have said, “If you can do it, I can do it.”‘

Dick was recently recognized for his decades-long career at the 2021 Kennedy Center Honors with a lifetime achievement award.

But the actor isn’t stopping there: ‘I think the next thing is a knighthood,’ he told The Mirror

‘Recognition from your peers is always icing on the cake. How did I get to a Kennedy award? I never trained or did anything. I just enjoyed myself,’ he told the site.

The icon also joked: ‘I just turned 95, so I’m happy to be anywhere. Had I known I’d live this long, I’d have taken better care of myself.’
