Boris Johnson and his new wife Carrie celebrated their wedding with a short mini-moon, Downing Street confirmed today.

The 56-year-old Prime Minister and Mrs Johnson, 33, escaped to Chequers, the grace-and-favour retreat in Buckinghamshire for a couple of days, before he returned to work this morning in Downing Street.

They married on Saturday in a surprise ceremony at Westminster Cathedral before celebrating with a small group of family and friends at a summer festival-themed party at No10.

A No 10 spokesman today told reporters: ‘The PM spent Sunday and Monday away but is now back working from Downing Street.’

Asked where Mr Johnson travelled, the spokesman said: ‘It is a personal matter so I won’t be getting into any further detail.’

However, he did confirm that following controversy about who paid for the six-figure renovation of Mr and Mrs Johnson’s 11 Downing Street flat: ‘The Prime Minister paid entirely for the wedding.’

Mrs Johnson, who is the PM’s third wife, changed her social media handles to 48 hours after their top-secret wedding.

The former Tory PR chief, who has a one-year-old son with Mr Johnson, updated her Twitter and Instagram accounts last night.

Her name has now been changed from ‘Carrie Symonds’ to ‘Carrie Johnson’, while her handles are now carrielbjohnson.

It comes after Mrs Johnson’s friends claimed her marriage is a ‘triumph’ in her brutal Downing Street civil war with Dominic Cummings.

They hit out at the former No10 aide after the Johnsons surprise wedding, which capped a roller-coaster week in which the couple were both rocked by Mr Cummings’ explosive testimony to MPs.
