A stylist has revealed how you can transform your home from ‘drab and dreary’ to ‘magazine worthy’ by following five simple rules that won’t break the bank.
Crystal Bailey, 36, has been an interior decorator for 10 years and told FEMAIL she loves jobs which push her creativity to the limit.
For Crystal it doesn’t matter if you have children, are renting, on a tight budget or if your home has small rooms and low levels of natural light.
For her anyone can achieve a ‘designer look’ by following her five key rules.
The first is to bring nature into the home.
‘Something as simple as adding fresh flowers or foliage makes a huge difference,’ she said noting it’s a budget friendly way to liven up the home.
For those with a bit more room in their budget she recommends buying some indoor plants as well.
‘Something as simple as collecting some foliage from the garden and putting it on display inside can breathe life into your home,’ she said

The next tip is to ‘get creative with paint’.
For renters this could mean painting some furniture, using white paint to ‘cover over anything with texture’.
‘Paint is a great way to transform a space and can be used on furniture or walls,’ she said.
Pops of colour are also important – and using them well is rule number three for the designer.
‘You could use colour pops in the cushions or artwork,’ she said.
Quality cushions are better, she said, but can be bought cheaply on Facebook Marketplace and Gumtree.
Pops of colour help to brighten up small spaces and are great for people who are renting.
‘Coloured linen on beds is also a great way to freshen up a space,’ she said.
Artwork is the fourth must.
‘Walls can make a space feel quite empty,’ she said.
‘Bigger artworks make small spaces feel big,’ she revealed.
‘Lots of smaller things will just make it feel cluttered.’
Crystal recommends 3M hooks for walls in rentals – because they allow things to be hung without damaging the plaster or paint work.
Leaning large artworks on the wall is also good if you have furniture to prop it on.
Using foliage inside is the easiest way to make the space look and feel better, according to Crystal
‘Artwork is great for people with kids, because they are not likely to touch it,’ she said.
The final tip is to ‘pick and choose’ expensive items. Cheap or vintage furniture can be made to look expensive with some high-quality décor.
These finishing touches help take the space to another level.
‘By blending budget buys with a few designer pieces you elevate the whole aesthetic of the room,’ she said.
Budget pieces could include second-hand rugs and coffee tables which are often expensive in store.
