‘I’ve still not met Blur!’: Donatella Versace responds to hilarious mix-up with Blue

Donatella Versace poked fun at Blue’s revelation they once were invited by the designer to attend Milan Fashion Week, only for her aides to have mixed them up with Blur.

Blue band member Anthony Costa revealed how the noughties boyband met the Italian fashionista, 66, after a show in 2001, but were left red-faced when it was revealed her assistant had invited the wrong band.

Donatella took to Instagram on Wednesday and wrote: ‘Well… I’ve still not met Blur’.

The fashion designer shared a screengrab of MailOnline’s article and added a cry laughing and shrugging shoulders emoticon to her caption.

Donatella’s fans also flooded social media over the hilarious mix-up. One wrote: ‘Have just seen a story about Donatella Versace’s team once accidentally booking a performance from Blue instead of Blur’.

Another chimed: ‘Can’t believe we’re only hearing about this story 20 years on. Two decades we’ve gone without knowing this. Shameful.’

A third added: ‘1 for the money and the free ride’, while a fourth fan typed: ‘Blue at a fashion show is way more iconic than blur.’

Antony, 39, was speaking on Ben Hanlin’s Ben Behaving Dadly podcast when he revealed Blue had accidentally been invited on the trip to Milan Fashion Week which had been meant for the band Blur.

Antony said that Donatella’s assistants had mixed up the name of the band that the designer had wanted to invite, meaning Blue were contacted rather than Blur.

He said: ‘In 2001 we released our first single, it was going really well for us and we got invited to Milan Fashion Week by Donatella Versace.

‘So we got kitted out by Versace at Bond Street. We got a private plane out there, they flew us out there.

‘We landed, went to the fashion show, and afterwards they were like “Look, we want you to meet Donatella”.’

Antony said he and his other band members flew out to meet Donatella and were asked to line up ‘like we were meeting the Queen’, before she just looked at them.

He said that they had all been left confused by the situation, but that the reason for the awkward encounter wasn’t explained to them until after they had left.

Antony said: ‘To cut a long story short, when we get back to London, and she had invited Blur and not Blue.’

Despite the mix-up, Antony said he and the other band members had enjoyed themselves: ‘But we got kitted out, so I was sweet.’

The story comes after Antony recently recalled sofa surfing when he was ‘skint’ following the band’s split in 2005.

In an interview with The Hot Mess Mums Club, he admitted there were points in his career when he ‘couldn’t afford to get home’ as he blamed his past financial troubles on ‘not receiving advice about how to save money’ during his heyday.

Antony said: ‘There were times that I couldn’t even afford to get home afterwards to where I lived in Hertfordshire.

‘I was sofa surfing because I was so skint. We were never given any advice on what to do with our money, how to save it, what not to do, and I was 18 years old and thought Blue was gonna last for donkey’s years.

‘When you are going through that, you would really find out who your mates are. You would just know who the fake friends were, like we would be at a party and people would be cracking up at a joke I would tell that wasn’t even funny.’

The stage star confessed he was also left confused about his next steps when the group – also consisting of Duncan James, Lee Ryan and Simon Webbe – parted ways.

‘Then my next calling happened to be me going into I’m A Celeb, then I was around people that I never thought I would be with, and I thought to myself I need to do something on my own, whether it be theatre or singing or being in a soap.

‘I auditioned for the show Blood Brothers, and for me I always loved auditions, I loved being the underdog, and from that it just went on and on.

‘I was always the underdog even in the band, it was always the other three and then me, if you were to put us in a room people would always go to the other three.’
