A photographer has captured the incredible moment a whirlpool appeared to form at one of Australia’s most iconic beaches.

Dario Berzosa Sánchez, 34, was down at Bondi Beach over the weekend with his drone when he noticed the bizarre movement in the water.

A group of surfers were unknowingly paddling right around the ‘whirlpool’, which Mr Berzosa Sánchez believed was formed from recent large swells.

‘It was probably caused by the strong currents and big swell over the weekend,’ he told Daily Mail Australia.

‘If you take a look you can see the surfers are actually getting dragged to it but they probably didn’t realise it was there.

‘Fortunately no swimmers were nearby because that could have gone pretty badly depending on the strength of the circular current.’

Mr Berzosa Sánchez shared the amazing photo to his Instagram page with many left baffled at what could have caused it.

While experts weren’t able to confirm the cause of the strange water movement, whirlpools are known to form in oceans, rivers and the bottom of waterfalls.

They appear when two different flowing currents meet and may then start to spiral downwards.

If whirlpools become larger and more violent, a maelstrom forms which in some cases can be highly dangerous.

There are several maelstroms around Europe including the Saltstraumen near Norway that is so strong ships can only pass through it during certain times of the day.
