Knox Hall’s four acre gardens comprise raised flower beds, terrace seating areas and a pond.

It was built in about 1850 in the ‘cottage orné’ architectural style, which means ‘decorated cottage’, during what is known as the ‘Romantic era’ for architecture.

Homes of this design were built to make a good first impression and were usually elevated to provide a clear view of the building against a wooded backdrop.

Knox Hall is understood to have been constructed by the owner of a nearby mill, which was built about 100 years earlier.

This is the first time the property has gone for sale in a century on the open market. The property has been restored and enlarged under the guidance of Listed Buildings Control, due to its listed status.

A spokesman for Harrogate estate agent Beadnall Copley said: ‘This home reminiscent to that of a fairy tale has to be one of the region’s most iconic and renowned homes.

‘It enjoys a proud trophy-like position whilst still boasting a secluded and private setting complete with approximately four acre enchanted wood.

‘It has been lovingly restored and enlarged and now not only boasts beautiful architecture, reminiscent of that of fairy-tale princess’s castle, but spacious, well planned accommodation.’
