Coming in hot: Heston Blumenthal made a memorable appearance on Thursday’s episode of MasterChef

Appearing via a pre-recorded video, Heston’s image was beamed onto 10 individual TV screens that had been stacked in front of the contestants next to the judges.

‘I like that Heston’s arrival is heralded by the kind of nonsense video imagery that would play behind a 2am DJ set at Meredith,’ tweeted one viewer.

‘Why did Heston get multiple screens? Why couldn’t we have multiple Nigella’s?’ asked another fan, referencing Nigella Lawson’s appearance on the show on Sunday.

Added another: ‘Heston said I need ten screens and then LEFT’.

But MasterChef insisted there are ‘never too many Heston’s’, adding a starry-eyed emoji to a Twitter post featuring the Fat Duck restaurateur.

Others were perplexed by Heston’s pre-recorded message, which saw him poking fun at judge Jock Zonfrillo’s sense of style.

‘Jock, we’ve known each other for quite a while now and I have to say – when did you turn into a Scottish lord?’ he said.

He added: ‘You dress like somebody that should be hunting pheasants!’

Jock, 44, responded by pointing out that Heston was ‘dialling in from the South of France in a chateau’.

But many viewers found the exchange bizarre, and said it was evident that Heston’s appearance had been pre-recorded.

‘Our friend Heston has something to say that he recorded earlier…’ tweeted one viewer.

‘It’s such a privelege [sic] to be cooking in front of (a pre-recorded video of) Heston Blumenthal,’ added another.
