‘I’m nostalgic for having to dress up in a ridiculous way’: Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp claims social media has ruined fashion

Spandau Ballet’s Gary Kemp claims social media has ruined fashion and identity.

In a new interview, the singer, 61, whose group was known for being part of the New Romantic era, admitted he’s ‘nostalgic for having to dress up in a ridiculous way’ and criticised today’s ‘filter’ culture.

The musician said: ‘The trouble is now is people don’t have fashion outfits, they have filters. So they don’t need to go and be visibly seen on the street. They’ll just put themselves on Instagram with the right filter.

‘I am nostalgic for those days when it was about place. I’m nostalgic for the mystery of hunting out something and then finding yourself part of it.

‘Music should always be about theatre. I found the whole 90s thing of people just wearing anoraks and pretending to be the lad next door a little bit disappointing. I felt like I was being half sold.’

Last year, the songwriter admitted he was eager to reunite with his legendary pop band.

The artist insisted the ball is in singer Tony Hadley’s court after the band reunited for a series of shows in 2018 without the frontman.

Speaking this week, Gary told Radio Times: ‘If everyone decided to do it, I’d do it. I’m not trying to stop anyone.

‘We tried to do it with a different singer a year ago – I didn’t enjoy it, I don’t think it works for us all.

His brother Martin previously said the rows between the pair at the height of the band’s success in the 1980s helped save the band.

The former EastEnders star added: ‘When Spandau were at the peak, there was a lot of pressure on us as brothers that kind of saved the band for years.’

Spandau Ballet split in 1990 to allow its members pursued other acting and solo projects.

The new wave band reunited successfully for a number of world tours in 2009 but lead singer Tony quit in 2017.
