What a cracker! Peppa the hen who has a ‘record of producing big eggs’ lays one with a TRIPLE yolk

  • Janice Sharpe, 71, couldn’t believe her eyes when she cracked a large egg into her pan and saw three yolks sizzling away
  • The retired postmistress buys her eggs from a converted red phone box in the village of Letwell, South Yorkshire
  • They cost £3 a dozen and come from Peppers Field, a local equine and poultry rescue centre
  • Peppa, the queen of the flock, was responsible for the triple-yolked egg

She thought the egg seemed far bigger than usual. And when Janice Sharpe cracked it into her pan she was astonished to see three yolks sizzling away.

Mrs Sharpe, 71, had occasionally had a double yolk before, but never a triple.

‘I couldn’t believe it. My eyes nearly popped out of my head,’ she said. ‘I took a picture because I thought nobody would believe me.’

‘I never imagined for a minute there was room for three yolks in one eggshell. It certainly is value for your money getting three for the price of one,’ Mrs Sharpe said.

Her egg was laid by Peppa, queen of the flock at Peppers Field.

Louise Addy, who runs the centre and has rehomed thousands of battery hens, said: ‘Peppa is three years old and has a record of producing very big eggs. I’ve never known a chicken lay a triple-yolker.’

The chance of a triple yolk is about one in 25 million, according to the British Egg Information Service.
