Jessica McNamee reveals she was not allowed to play the Mortal Kombat video game as a teen because it was ‘too violent’ – ahead of her starring role in the new big screen adaption
Jessica McNamee stars in the upcoming big screen reboot of Mortal Kombat.
But the actress, 34, has revealed that she was not allowed to play the video game the film is based on as a teen, as her parents deemed it too violent.
‘But I did play it at my cousin’s house and I didn’t tell my parents; they still don’t know,’ she told The Daily Telegraph.

Jessica herself recently watched the film on the big screen and said the action sequences are breathtaking.
‘It’s pretty action packed, it’s non stop. I was exhausted just watching it – in a good way,’ she said.
‘It’s really fun and you’re on the edge of your seat the whole time, and I knew what was happening, I knew the story and I was still on the edge of my seat.’

Warner Bros. debuted a new Mortal Kombat trailer earlier this year, depicting a number of classic characters and sequences from the video game series it’s spawned from.
Among the characters seen in the preview include Lui Kang, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Sonya Blade, Shang Tsung and Goro, with some of their signature fatalities showcased in the trailer.
Director Simon McQuoid told Entertainment Weekly that the film wouldn’t be short on bloodshed in it’s depiction of battle and ‘pretty nasty hand-to-hand combat.’

He said that the motion picture is ‘not a shiny film,’ noting that he ‘wanted the dirt and the grime to come through.’
According to a studio synopsis, the storyline follows a new character named MMA fighter Cole Young as he ‘seeks out Earth’s greatest champions in order to stand against the enemies of Outworld in a high stakes battle for the universe.’
The film’s cast also includes Josh Lawson, Ludi Lin, Joe Taslim, Hiroyuki Sanada, Tadanobu Asano and Mehcad Brooks, among others.
